It is that time of the year again to show your passion for the ocean. Saipan, Rota, and Tinian will be participating in the Annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). We are joining the global community to work towards trash free seas by coordinating beach cleanups throughout the CNMI. The ICC will take place on Saturday, September 17, 2016.
The trash along our coast and in our waters endangers the health of residents, wildlife, and coastal economies. Last year the CNMI had over 1,300 participants pick up 2.7 tons of trash that included plastic bags, straw wrappers, and cigarette butts. This year we are aiming to increase the number of participants across the islands.
The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality is encouraging businesses, organizations, clubs, and individuals to spend a few hours cleaning up trash from our land, waterways, and oceans. We invite you to sign up for the event and volunteer to cleanup. You may also host a cleanup with our help. To sign up or for further information contact your International Coastal Cleanup Coordinator.
